12 Phrase Rhythms for a Bow
is a rhythmic composition for the flexible structure of a bow.
As a resonating body, the bow has its own particular frequency.
An elliptical bow stands on its two end-points. The bow is made from a band of sheet aluminum, stretched into a tense arc by a length of steel wire. One side of the bow is attached to the ground with a hinge. On that same side, an excenter motor, connected to the bow by a spring, sets the metal band into motion. The shifting rhythm of the movements can be manipulated through a micro-controller.
Impulse, energy and resonance provide a temporal configuration of stimuli that generate a rhythmic series of consecutive and interrelated movements and resulting sounds. The twelve-part composition has a duration of one year.
The materiality of the bow itself is also subject to change over time: not only does its shape shift, but the aluminum’s appearance transforms over time as well, oxidizing quickly such that an irregular white pattern gradually develops on the bow’s surface.
The work’s dynamic structure engages the audience in a direct and physical manner, as the rhythmic movements and sounds effect the audiences own visceral sensations. A pas de deux thus emerges in which the work and the viewer are intertwined.
